Amos Nyambane is one of millions of Kenyan students who pursued other opportunities after years of university.
In 2016, he graduated from Dedan Kimathi University with a bachelor’s degree in procurement.
Nyambane entered the labor market hoping to find work, but he was unsuccessful, pushing him to pursue other possibilities.
“After graduating in 2016, I went to Nairobi and applied for over 100 hundred jobs, but I couldn’t find one,” he said.
Nyambane subsequently discovered a story about a farmer online which motivated him to start his own chicken farm.
“At first, my parents were not of the idea of me venturing into farming; they could not believe how a learned person could risk on farming instead of working in a big office in the city,” he stated.
Nyambane went on to start Mkulima Sharp, where he raises and supplies Kuroiler, Rainbow Rooster and Kenbro one-day-old chicks.
He mostly sells chicks to farmers in Kisii County, where he owns his farm, and the surrounding areas.
To begin, Nyambane worked menial jobs to earn enough money to purchase 40 local chicken breeds.

He acquired the chicks for Ksh 200 apiece but sold them to a broker for Ksh 300 each since he didn’t understand how the value chain worked.
Nyambane went on to purchase some upgraded kienyeji and 150 kuroiler breeds for Ksh 50 each from a hatchery in Homa Bay to start anew.
Today, he sells chicks on his farm for between Ksh 75 and Ksh 85, earning up to Ksh 30,000 every week because he works with over 18,000 farmers around the country.
Nyambane feeds his chickens kale and three-week-old Napier grass grown on a two-acre leased plot of land in Kisii.
He has been able to collaborate with farmers from Nairobi, Mombasa, Eldoret and Kisumu as a result of his Facebook account.
Given the huge demand for chicks, Nyambane obtains more chicks from a hatchery in Homa Bay and Kampala for delivery to consumers.
“We supply the chicks on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of every week; in this, we advise clients to pay affront before delivery,” he added.
