Robert Macharia: Nairobi Farmer Who Went From Being Jobless to Making Ksh 5,000 Per Day From Goat Milk

Robert Macharia’s agribusiness venture began in 2011, when he was laid off from his work, leaving him unemployed yet motivated to pursue alternate revenue sources.

With his Ksh 20,000 savings, he bought German Alpine dairy goats from a farmer in Embu, hoping to provide nutritious milk for his family while also investigating alternative income options.

However, as his goats proliferated, Macharia’s vision broadened, and he saw dairy goat farming as a profitable enterprise.

As time went by, his herd grew to over 50 dairy goats, mostly German Alpine types, that he feeds a mix of dry matter and silage to save green fodder for later use.

To guarantee his goats’ nutritional demands are met, Macharia even employs a truck to transport hay and grass from Naivasha, demonstrating his commitment to their welfare.

His hard work has paid off, as his 14 milked goats produce an average of 25 liters of milk every day.

Selling each liter for Ksh 200, his daily income is an amazing Ksh 5000.

The demand for his goat milk is so great that he frequently runs out of supply due to a large number of customer orders, the majority of which come from people with prescriptions.

Macharia registered his farm as Mwihoko Dairy Goat Farm in 2017, realizing its potential for expansion and the influence it may have on the community.

Along with his booming business, he is now dedicated to educating and coaching prospective dairy goat producers.

Macharia’s goal is to reduce poverty in the local community by sharing his knowledge and expertise, making dairy goat farming a viable and profitable business opportunity for others.

His journey has been wonderful, but it has not been without its hardships.

One of the most significant challenges has been a lack of experienced and trustworthy veterinary officials, which has resulted in goat population reductions.

Furthermore, low-quality animal foods on the market have had a negative impact on productivity.

Macharia, on the other hand, is tenacious, continually looking for ways to keep his goats healthy and productive.
