Zetech University is among the rapidly expanding academic institutions in the nation, based on the quantity of students enrolled and the range of programmes provided.
The main campus of Zetech, which is situated along Ruiru, Thika Road, can accommodate more than 6,000 students.
Ken Mbiuki founded the institution in 1997, while studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nairobi.
According to Mbiuki, the institution began in his university hostel, where he provided computer application instruction to fellow students.
He stated that student pressure and a shortage of computer training institutes prompted him to provide training in his hostel room.
“Initially I had two to three students but the number went up between the end of 1997 to 1999, growing between 200 to 300 students,” he said.
The increased number of students benefited Mbiuki by increasing his monthly income to roughly Kshs 200,000.
As the numbers grew, he decided to register and officially run Zenith Technology, which was later renamed Zetech College in 1999.
Following the rebranding, the college opened a branch in Nairobi’s Central Business District, intending to recruit clientele from areas other than the University of Nairobi.
After relocating to Nairobi’s central business district, the college launched an expansion campaign to achieve university status.
Their goal was finally met in August 2014, when they acquired a Letter of Interim Authority.
Zetech University’s Ruiru Campus Complex was officially opened in 2015 by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The complex consists of a modern, multipurpose building that houses academic and administrative offices along with tuition rooms.
On November 10, 2017, the institution awarded degrees to its inaugural cohort of degree candidates.
The students received degrees in a variety of subjects, including business management, hospitality, education and procurement.
Zetech welcomed its first group of government-sponsored students in September of that year.
Zetech began offering post-graduate degrees in 2021, four years after graduating, with a Master of Business Administration programme.
The institution’s greatest moment occurred in August 2022 when President Kenyatta granted the charter to grow into a full-fledged university following fulfilment of all the requirements set down by the Commission for University Education.
