Design

The 2023 Strix G 16 is a full-fledged gaming laptop targeted at competitive gamers expecting top of the line performance in a chassis that caters to all gamer’s needs. The 2023 Strix G 16 features a completely redesigned chassis with new 16” dimensions. The design takes inspiration in sports resulting in a bold, sporty and vibrant appearance. 

Depending on the design ID, the aluminum lid is adorned by one of two ROG staple “slash pattern” and a backlit logo. The chassis is made out of light, durable plastic, making sure surface areas stay cool to the touch.

The 2.0mm travel distance keyboard provides a satisfying and comfortable experience during each keystroke. The 5 programmable hot-keys on the upper left section of the keyboard deck can be customized to users’ self-defined functions. Last but not least, the keyboard deck also features a 10% wider 126.9 x 84mm glass trackpad.  

RGB elements can be found throughout the chassis bringing forth the bold, vibrant, gamer-like character of the Strix series. Both RGB keyboard (Per-Key and 4-Zone options available) and under-glow wraparound light can be customized to users’ preferences thanks to Aura Sync support. 

The display area features a new 16:10 aspect ratio with side bezels are slimmer than ever with just 3.75mm, accounting for an impressive 89% screen-to-body ratio. A 720p camera is available at users’ convenience. Lastly the extended rubber feet on the bottom prop up the device for additional airflow and provides improved grip on flat surfaces.

The 2023 Strix G features a choice of 16:10, 16”  displays. The laptop is available in either QHD+ or FHD+ resolution. The 16” QHD+ panels are available in either IPS or Mini LED variants. Refresh rate go as high as 240Hz while response times can go as low as 3ms for the QHD+ panels. All display configurations support G-Sync® in the laptop display. Dolby Vision® support and 100% DCI-P3 color gamut are available for the QHD+ panel.

Mini LED Technology – Nebula HDR

Typical LCD panels use a small group of LED lights to project an image on-screen. But because those lights are always on, black parts of the screen can look grey, making the image look washed out.

Mini LEDs are much smaller than typical LEDs, with diodes smaller than 0.2mm. Display engineers can pack these diodes in much more densely than on typical displays, allowing for separate zones of mini LEDs that can dim themselves individually. This creates darker blacks and brighter highlights, for a stunning image that truly pops. 

The Nebula HDR engine is a purpose-built algorithm capable of reducing haloing by up to 25%. Trained on an instruction set of more than 150 videos and over 2000 still photos, the algorithm is able to dynamically adjust the HDR lighting needed to keep any haloing from the dimming zones to a minimum.

Response Times in Mini LED

Measuring response times in Mini LED panels cannot be effectively done with the same tools used for conventional LCD panels. In Mini LED panels each dimming zone is turned on and off at 5 KHz in a fashion reminiscent to PWM. Where normal LCDs brightness levels are adjusted following a continuous pattern, Mini LED brightness adjustments are erratic and thus might lead to miscalculation.

DisplayHDR™ is the open standard for HDR quality and performance and can only be acquired by products featuring displays that meet all the criteria. VESA has set a number of HDR levels; all of which must support HDR10.

The 2023 Strix G16 Mini LED display is VESA DisplayHDR™ 1000 certified. A VESA DisplayHDR™ 1000 display requires 10-bit image processing and peak luminance of up to 1000 cd/m2. These displays feature outstanding color gamut, local dimming and high contrast HDR and are perfect for professionals, enthusiast and content creators.

The 2023 Strix G 16 comes equipped with Intel® latest 13th Gen Processors. Intel® 13th Gen Core™ Processors are based on Intel® 7 process (10nm) and features Intel® new hybrid architecture with Performance and Efficiency Cores. 

Intel® 13th gen processors offer several upgrades over 12th gen, combined these elements translate into better gaming performance and improved efficacy in multi-threaded applications. The 2023 Strix G 16 is equipped with the latest NVIDIA® RTX™ 40 series of laptop graphics. NVIDIA® RTX™ 40 series laptop graphics new Ada Lovelace microarchitecture is based on TSMC’s 4N Process, about half as small as the one used in the previous Ampere architecture, allowing the graphics to deliver more performance for the same power rating as last gen graphics.

The RTX™ 40 series laptop graphics offer support for several key technologies to optimize the gaming experience. Thanks to the new 3rd Gen RTX™ Cores and NVIDIA® new Share Execution Reordering (SER) technology, Ray Tracing performance while gaming has significantly improved. 4th Generation Tensor Cores improves upon last generation in AI related tasks opening up the door to new technologies such as the upgraded DLSS 3.0. DLSS 3.0 expands prediction from pixels to frames, allowing the next frame to be predicted without the need of having the image data yet to be rendered.

Results on dGPU while in Turbo Mode

NVIDIA® Advanced Optimus

Similar to the 2022 model, the 2023 Strix G 16 is equipped with a MUX Switch. The MUX or Multiplexer Switch allows users to manually engage or disengage the processor’s integrated graphics allowing the frames to be routed directly from the discrete GPU to the display.

The 2023 Strix G 16 takes this thing one step further by adding support for NVIDIA® Advanced Optimus. Advanced Optimus bypasses the MUX requirement to restart the device after switching between MSHybrid mode and discrete graphics, instead Advanced Optimus automatically switches between the discrete graphics and integrated graphics depending on the situation. 

In comparison to standard MSHybrid mode, with Advanced Optimus enabled the laptop can offer noteworthy gains in term of gaming performance

Memory

Cooling

ROG Intelligent Cooling Ecosystem

The 2023 Strix G 16 operates cool and quiet thanks to ROG Intelligent Cooling Ecosystem. ROG Intelligent Cooling Ecosystem uses a strategic mix of hardware and features to achieve ideal cooling for each combination of components and chassis, while keeping noise levels low. The 2023 Strix G 16 is equipped with several key ROG Intelligent Cooling Ecosystem features: 

Conductonaut Extreme LM

Conductonaut Extreme Liquid metal has been applied to the CPU. Conductonaut Extreme offers 17X better thermal conductivity and 15°C lower temperatures compared to traditional thermal pastes.

Frost Force Technology 

Frost Force Technology directs air though precisely calculated cutouts in the chassis, sending airflow directly towards internal components to keep them cool in all conditions. A third auxiliary fan also helps to send additional heat from the GPU directly to the heatsinks, keeping the machine cool during long video renders or gaming sessions.

Pulsar Heatsink 

The Pulsar Heatsink is an all-copper thermal module, double the size of a normal heatskink which covers the entire rear of the device. The module features 330 heatsink fins, each stack lined with ultra-thin copper fins as slim as 0.1mm, allowing for higher density and lower air resistance, with a total of 110,902mm² of surface area. 

Arc Flow Fans

The 84-blade Arc Flow Fans have a variable thickness design, down to 0.1mm at the tip. This approach reduces resonance and turbulence, moving up to 13% more air compared to 83-blade designs.

0dB Ambient Cooling

In the Silent operating mode, the cooling system switches off all fans during everyday tasks to dissipate heat passively for super quite operation. If CPU or GPU temperatures increase, the fans automatically switch on again. 

Scenario Profiles

Scenario Profiles allow the 2023 Strix G 16 to automatically switch between profile settings depending on the application being used. The Silent, Performance, Turbo and Manual operating modes offer users a great degree of control on how users choose to use their laptop. 

 

Operating Modes

All ROG Gaming notebooks offer multiple operating modes to fit different scenarios and user requirements. Operating modes are configured as follows:

  • Windows: Follows default Windows power settings.
  • Silent: Limits CPU and GPU power while keeping noise levels to a minimum (even turning off the fans entirely for 0dB equipped models). Ideal for light workloads, browsing and movies.
  • Performance: Balances performance, temperature, and acoustics for any scenario. 
  • Turbo: Maximizes power to the CPU and GPU for high-performance gaming and demanding workloads, with maximum airflow to the fans. 
  • Manual: Allows users to create custom fan profiles and tune wattages to match their needs perfectly.

Battery

The 2023 Strix G 16 is equipped with a large 90Whr battery. The battery benchmark results show that the 2023 Strix G 16 is able to last as long as TBDhrs powered on. 

The battery can be charged by either the included (up to) 330W adapter, through the conventional DC plug, or through the 100W PD charge enabled Type-C port. The battery can be charged as fast as 50% in just 30 minutes.

Wi-Fi

The 2023 Strix G 16 is Wi-Fi 6E enabled. Wi-Fi 6E maintains all the benefits of Wi-Fi 6 like improved security, as well as faster and more stable connections. Furthermore, by having access to the 6GHz frequency band, an additional 1200MHz of bandwidth are made available. This means that Wi-Fi 6E is capable of yielding faster throughput with lower latency compared to previous Wi-Fi iterations. 

Audio

Speakers

The 2023 Strix G 16 features 2 speakers. The Smart Amp equipped woofers are able to produce sounds up to 2.85X louder than non-Smart Amp equipped ones. 

The 2023 Strix G 16 supports Dolby Atmos. Dolby Atmos enhances spatial immersion with more nuanced and layered virtual sound effects that can be further optimized with specially tuned presets for movies and games.  

Microphone

The 2023 Strix G 16 features ROG Two Way AI Noise cancelling. ROG Two-Way AI Noise Cancelling works with any input device and with downstream connections, this means users can remove noise from both their own mic input as well as from incoming feeds. The advanced Two-Way AI Noise Cancelation technology runs on the CPU, freeing up the GPU. Noise-canceling settings can be customized to fit the application, filtering specific apps like voice chat without affecting game audio that should remain untouched.

XBOX Game Pass Subscription

The 2023 Strix G 16 includes a free 30 days subscription to XBOX Game Pass out of the box. XBOX Game Pass offers unlimited access to over 100 high-quality PC games on Windows 10 or above.
