Western; five cases of fire recorded in schools last week

Police are investigating a number of fire incidents in five schools. According to police they suspect students to have set a blaze their buildings in four out of five schools that went down in flames last week. Among the affected schools is a national school and three County schools that have since sent students home as they asses damages.

In Trans-Nzoia County, St. Josephs Boys High School and St. Josephs girls dormitories were burnt down completely under unclear circumstances.

Bungoma high school in Bungoma county has been having unrest in school for weeks until last week when rogue students set a blaze their dormitory. Police have arrested one student who is helping them with investigation the other suspect students are however still at large. Kamusinde Boys School in Kimilili constituency of Bungoma County also went down in flames but students are still in school.

The latest incident is Kitale School in Kitale town Transnzoia County where a classroom building for the primary school section was razed down by fire on Sunday. Kitale school is a complex School with a girls secondary School, and a mixed boarding primary school.

More than 30 pupils have been admitted in Kitale county referral hospital with minor injuries, while six require special medical attention

Speaking to Newsday.co.ke on Monday 25th school head teacher Emyl Sitienei revealed that the incident was as result of fault in electricity

“It was one of the class seven streams, seemingly there was fault in the power lines , we are yet to confirm though . We thank God most of our pupils were in the dormitories and we don’t have casualties apart from a number of cases where pupils suffocated and were rushed to hospital.” Said Emyl

Saboti member of parliament Caleb Hamisi through his manager Luke Naibei has promised to reconstruct the razed classroom and asked other well wishers to help in building the classroom so that the school can return to normalcy.

“We have lost one classroom here and we also have other cases in St. Josephs boys and girls. We are requesting the county leadership and the national government to help us fix this problem as soon as possible. As the CDF of Saboti we will play our role to ensure its possibly done” said Naibei

Local leaders have asked teachers to listen to students grievances and act professionally whenever students feel uncomfortable to avoid such incidents in future.
