Wambua Kinyao: Businessman Who Rose From Hawking Honey to Owning 14 Petrol Stations

Wambua Kinyao’s entrepreneurial journey began during his primary school years when he managed several beehives.

He owned approximately twelve beehives, from which he harvested and sold honey.

Following the completion of his primary education, Wambua enrolled in a local polytechnic to study motor vehicle mechanics.

Subsequently, he moved to Nairobi after securing employment at a butchery.

After a few months in the city, he returned home and invested his savings of Ksh 2,800 into a honey-selling venture.

He purchased honey from local farmers and sold it by cycling around the area, while also offering utensils and other goods during the off-season.

Eventually, Wambua established a kiosk in Ulilinzi Town, where he sold various items, including hides, cereals, and clothing.

After some time, he saved enough money to acquire a second-hand tractor equipped with a disc plough, which he rented out to farmers.

Before long, Wambua had accumulated sufficient funds to purchase two trucks for transporting cereals to the market.

With the profits from his new enterprises, he opened a hardware store and a wholesale grocery shop in his local community.

Regrettably, the enterprises failed due to financial obligations, compelling him to sell his tractor and two trucks after unsuccessful attempts to revive the business.

After a brief period of uncertainty, Wambua obtained a loan of Ksh 500,000 from a local bank and moved to Kibwezi Town.

In 2006, he established a hardware store in the area, and due to his industry knowledge, he was able to surpass his rivals.

Wambua subsequently acquired a fleet of trucks and diversified his investments into real estate by purchasing residential properties.

In 2013, he ventured into the fuel industry, having been advised against investing in the education sector; at that time, Wambua had considered establishing a school or a maize milling operation.

Initially starting with one tanker, he now operates 14 outlets and provides bulk fuel deliveries to other merchants.

Wambua’s most recent petrol station was inaugurated in Oloitoktok, Kajiado County, on December 25, 2022.

“Boda bodas are our primary market. We deliver fuel very close to where they operate after realising that the motorcycle taxis form a significant market which is largely untapped,” he said.
