Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has released the 2016 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination results.

According to the KCSE results, only 15.4 per cent of students score between grade A and C. This translates to 88,929 candidates.

Dr Matiang’i captured the extent of the drop in performance when he stated that some schools which previously managed 196 straight A’s could hardly manage fifteen this year.

“Last year, schools which produced 196 straight As could not produce 15,” he noted.

141 students got grade A, 4,645 students got A minus, and 10,975 students got grade B plus. 73, 168 students got grade B to C.

All the KCSE papers were marked in Nairobi.

The results were released at Shimo La Tewa High School in Mombasa. This year, a total of 577,253 candidates sat for the examination at 9,158 centres across the country.

There were 274,423 girls and 302,830 boys who sat for the exam, compared with 243,581 girls and 279,289 boys in 2015.
