Head Coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno’s future at Kenyan football club KCB is in doubt as his contract is set to expire in August.
Sources suggest that the club is looking to take a new direction and find a coach who can bring them success in terms of winning titles.
Despite KCB’s financial strength compared to other teams in the league, Otieno has been unable to secure any silverware for the club during his four-year tenure.
The closest the team came to tasting victory was in the 2020-21 season when they finished as runners-up.
However, this season has been underwhelming for KCB. Despite making notable signings both before and during the mid-season transfer window, they have struggled to perform consistently, dropping points in matches they were expected to win.
Their campaign in the Mozzart Bet Cup also ended prematurely with a quarterfinal exit.
The lack of tangible success has prompted the club hierarchy to consider making changes. While Otieno may remain in charge for the remaining three matches of the season, it seems increasingly likely that a new coach will be brought in to lead the team going forward.
A source within the club, speaking to Mozzart Sports, revealed that there is a strong belief that retaining Otieno for another season will not lead to any improvement.
“Our football team is the only team that has yet to win silverware, yet it is one with one of the biggest budgets. The coach has been here for four years, and we do not think that things will change for the better even if he is let him continue next season. I am 90% sure that there will be changes in the next few weeks,” a source from the club who sought anonymity told Mozzart Sport.
Currently, KCB sits in fifth place in the league standings with 57 points.
