A few days ago, reports emerged claiming that former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairman (IEBC), Wafula Chebukati, had been admitted to Aga Khan Hospital.

According to blogger Cyprian Nyakundi, Chebukati was initially taken to Nairobi Hospital by his family. However, as his health deteriorated, he was rushed to Aga Khan Hospital.

“Former IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati has been moved from Nairobi Hospital to Aga Khan University Hospital. The ex-IEBC chair is said to be suffering from an unknown illness. Quick recovery!,” tweeted Nyakundi.

Contrary to these reports, a close family member and aide to the former IEBC chairman revealed to this writer that the online information was merely an attempt to tarnish Chebukati’s name. According to the source, Chebukati is peacefully enjoying his retirement in Bungoma.

“Chair (Chebukati) is okay; we spoke just two days ago, and he is enjoying life in his rural home. You should know that people are just trying to tarnish his reputation,” the close aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told this writer.

Since leaving office, Chebukati has been leading a quiet life, often sharing photos of himself enjoying time with his family at home.

He has faced criticism from the Azimio fraternity for allegedly mishandling the 2022 General elections, which resulted in President William Ruto being declared the winner.
