In an exclusive interview on her YouTube channel ‘Hey Mama,’ the First Lady of Nairobi County Beatrice Sakaja shared heartfelt insights into her life as the wife of Governor Johnson Sakaja. She opened up about motherhood, marriage, and the unique challenges she faces.
Motherhood and Politics
Beatrice Sakaja who is a mother of two boys, described how her marriage and family life have been intertwined with her husband’s political career. “Interestingly, the marriage started, the children started when he began politics,” she shared. “My firstborn was like one year old when he was nominated MP. So it’s the only thing I know.”
The county first lady revealed the surprising realization of her husband’s increasing responsibilities over time. “The challenges that come with it I guess I never realized how busy he was until he got busier. When he became Governor it was crazy,” she recounted. “I remember thinking, uh finally, we can relax after the elections.”
Despite the hectic schedule, Beatrice maintains a positive outlook. “Sometimes I joke that I am the only one who has proof of life, everybody else just smells him, his cologne, oh yeah Dad has been here. But did Dad come? That’s the kids, so it’s interesting to compare it to my childhood where my father was fairly present.”
Beatrice Sakaja’s quiet life
Preferring a quieter life, Beatrice has found ways to cope with the public scrutiny that comes with her husband’s political position. “Like I told you, I like to live my cocoon life. And it’s fairly easy for me as an adult to just avoid news or information that I don’t want to read about,” she explained. “So if somebody is dissing my husband online, I don’t read it, and my friends and family know that they shouldn’t send it to me.”
Beatrice added that despite her husband’s demanding career, he finds ways to connect with their children. “I don’t begrudge my husband’s inability to come home for dinner and sit with the kids because he has other ways of meeting and being there for them.”
The couple’s journey has been marked by significant milestones, including Governor Sakaja’s swearing-in ceremony at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on August 2, 2022. Beatrice and their children proudly stood by his side, highlighting the strength and unity of their family.
