Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, recently revealed what he earned as his first salary as a public servant when he joined the sector in February 1989.
Speaking during the launch of the value and principles compliance report 2021-2022 by the Public Service Commission, an event that was presided by President William Ruto, Gachagua encouraged the 3,902 interns who have been inducted into public service to take up their roles seriously.
Gachagua shared his own journey to his current leadership position, stating that it started way back at the Public Service Commission.
“I joined the public service on January 16th, 1989 as a District Officer Cadet at a salary of Sh3,230… this is a good beginning, seize the opportunity and learn, and one day, you will be somebody in this country, it is possible,” Gachagua said.
He urged the interns to understand that the public service is an institution of opportunities and learning.
“You don’t have to look from far, a little fellow who was an assistant secretary cadet earning Sh3,230 per month, today is Deputy President of Kenya,” he added.
According to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) improved package that was released last year towards the election, the President’s earning saw an increment of Sh227, 560, while the Deputy President’s earning was boosted by Sh190, 875.
This means the current President earns Sh1, 443,750 per month, while his deputy, Mr. Gachagua, receives Sh1, 227,188.
Gachagua also shared that he served as the Mathira Constituency Member of Parliament for one term, and was picked by the President during the campaigns as his running mate under the Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
He also served as the District Officer under the old Constitution during the regime of former President Moi.
