Kenya has recorded 426 new cases of Coronavirus (Covid-19) with the total cases reported so far rising to 31,441.
Addressing the media on Thursday, August 20, Health CAS Dr. Mercy Mwangangi announced that the confirmed cases were recorded from 5,128 samples tested in the last 24 hours.
She went on to reveal that 10 deaths had been reported in the last 24 hrs, 3 of whom were individuals under the age of 30 with no known underlying conditions.
From the new caseload, 9 were identified as foreigners while 417 were Kenyan nationals.
In terms of gender, 239 of the new confirmed cases were male, with 187 being female. The youngest is a 3-month-old infant and the oldest is aged 88.
However, on a positive note, 257 patients recovered from the coronavirus and were discharged.
CAS Mwangangi further revealed that the country was currently at a positivity rate of 7.9%, which was a steep rise from the 2% recorded at the start of the pandemic.
The new cases were distributed across the various counties as detailed below:
Nairobi 132, Kiambu 24, Machakos 21, Kajiado 63, Kericho 48, Migori 17, Mombasa 16, Kitui 13, Laikipia 13, Nakuru 11, Kisumu 11, Uasin Gishu 10, Tharaka Nithi 8, Nyeri 7, Busia 7, Makueni 6, Kilifi 4, Garissa 3, Nyandarua 3, Isiolo 2, Embu 2, Meru 1, Kirinyaga 1, Kakamega 1, Baringo 1 and Lamu 1.
Speaking during the press briefing, Health Director-General Dr. Patrick Amoth revealed that a huge percentage of the positive cases fell in the youth bracket.
“The biggest proportion of our caseload is people aged between 30 – 39 years, which is about 33% of the total caseload,” he stated.
