Approximately Ksh 14 million up for grabs for world record breakers at the World Championships

More than 1000 athletes from around the world will descend on Hungary’s new National Athletics Centre on Saturday, August 19 for nine days of thrilling competition at the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23.

As reported by World Athletics, an athlete who sets a world record will be eligible for a special award of Ksh 14,350,000 which will be offered by TDK and World Athletics’ new Inside Track platform.

For the performance to be considered a world record, it must be an improvement on the existing World Athletics record. It was noted that the performances that equal the existing world record will not be eligible for a world record award.

During last year’s World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA’s Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis became the recipients of a world record award, following their performances at the global showpiece.

McLaughlin-Levrone improved her own world 400m hurdles record to 50.68, while Duplantis took the pole vault to another level again, clearing 6.21m.

TDK will offer the award for men’s events while the women’s world record programme will be supported by World Athletics – Inside Track, a new online hub where fans can access exclusive content, discover untold stories, and unlock benefits.

For the mixed 4x400m relay, the programme will be supported by both TDK and World Athletics – Inside Track.

Meanwhile, World Athletics has allocated a total of Ksh 24,596,000 to reward the top eight finishers in individual events, with the winners set to receive Ksh 10,010,000, and the second-place finishers taking home Ksh 5,005,000.

The third-place finishers will walk away with a whooping Ksh 3,146,000. The athletes who finish fourth and fifth will receive Ksh 2,288,000 and Ksh 1,573,000 respectively. The sixth, seventh, and eighth athletes will be awarded Ksh 1,001,000, Ksh 858,000, and Ksh 715,000 respectively.

In the relays, World Athletics has set aside Ksh 26,598,000. The top three finishers will be awarded Ksh 11,440,000, Ksh 5,720,000, and Ksh 2,860,000 respectively.

The fourth, fifth, and sixth-place finishers will walk away with Ksh 2,288,000, Ksh 1,716,000, and Ksh 1,144,000 respectively. The seventh and eighth-place finishers will walk away with Ksh 858,000 and Ksh 572,000 respectively.
