Sonko bans kindergarten graduation ceremonies

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has banned kindergarten graduation ceremonies in Nairobi.

According to the controversial Nairobi Governor, the ceremonies are designed to extort parents under the guise of giving children right of passage to class one or grade one.

Over the recent past, graduation ceremonies in nursery schools have become hugely popular.

Tuesday, October 9, statement by the County Executive Committee member in charge of education, Janet Ouko, the county abolished all graduation ceremonies for the kids.

“We have noted with concern that schools are planning kindergarten graduation and charging parents between KSh 1000 and KSh 1500. This is against the spirit of free ECDE which is being offered by H.E the governor of Nairobi County,” read the statement.

“This is therefore to communicate a ban on all ECDE graduation ceremonies especially if they attract a charge,” she added.

The ban comes at a time when the learners are expected to sit for their end year exams in late October and early November 2018.

Kindergarten graduation ceremonies for nursery schools usually take place after the exams marking a promotion to the lower primary education.
