The CEO of Keroche Breweries, Tabitha Karanja, has shared a cryptic message on Twitter to the former Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) boss, Githii Mburu, following his shocking exit.
In a tweet, Karanja wished Mburu all the best in his future endeavors and shared her favorite Bible verse, Mathew 7:12, “Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you.”
“As you exit the stage to pave way for the new leadership at Kenya Revenue Authority, I wish to share with you my favourite bible verse in the book of Mathew 7:12 “Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you”,” she tweeted.
This comes after boths Karanja and Mburu were involved in a three-year-long court case after KRA pressed tax evasion charges against Keroche Breweries in 2020.
The case has been pending at the Milimani Chief Magistrate’s court since August 23, 2020.
KRA has shut down the Keroche factory multiple times since 2021, but in March 2022, the agency and the factory brokered a deal temporarily settling disputes. Keroche agreed to settle its close to KES 957 billion tax liability in two years, and KRA allowed the factory to resume its operations.
However, in 2022, KRA shut down the company six times for defaulting on an earlier agreed plan to repay tax arrears totalling KES 300 million. Karanja had said the only way the company could pay the taxes accrued is if it is operational.
KRA accused Keroche of failing to make the required payments agreed upon prior to reopening in July. According to KRA, Keroche was to pay KES 8 million on Aug 6, KES 8 million on Aug 30, and taxes worth KES 14.2 million, which were yet to be paid by that time.
The case is still ongoing, and the court ordered the Director of Public Prosecutions to supply copies of witness documents in the KES 14.5 billion tax evasion case against Keroche.
Karanja has denied the ten counts levelled against her by the State, and the case will be mentioned on March 13, to confirm whether the prosecution has supplied all documents to the defense.
