Youth leaders associated with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have strongly defended the party’s role in the Broad-Based Government. They see it as a vital force for national unity, inclusion, and long-term economic growth.

At a national holiday forum with youth delegates from all counties, the leaders discussed the youth-led protests against the 2024 Finance Bill. They believe these protests changed Kenya’s political scene. They emphasized that the demonstrations were not reckless or idealized but were thoughtful actions driven by responsibility and patriotism.

“The decision to challenge the Finance Bill was made to protect the Republic,” the youth leaders stated. They noted that the ongoing pressure from young people resulted in the bill being withdrawn and created opportunities for structured political discussions. They argued that this moment played a role in forming the Broad-Based Government, and its purpose and stability need to be upheld.

The youth reaffirmed that ODM was built on standing against exclusion and continues to follow the legacy of Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga. They insisted that inclusion is not just a political tool but a fundamental principle of the party. According to them, the Broad-Based Government provides a key chance to increase representation, encourage national healing, and restore balance in the Republic.

Why Ida Odinga is best-placed to unite emerging ODM factions

On leadership within the party, the youth made it clear that authority in ODM belongs to its delegates and established structures. They fully supported Dr. Oburu Odinga, calling him the legitimate party leader responsible for guiding the party through a sensitive political transition. The youth expressed their commitment to assist Oburu Odinga in implementing party decisions, managing coalition relations, and reinforcing institutional discipline.

They also endorsed resolutions from the Central Management Committee and recent delegates’ conventions, warning against public disputes and internal strife. “Disputes must be handled through party channels, not through the media,” the leaders warned.

Regarding generational dynamics, the youth urged cooperation between younger and older leaders, emphasizing that youthful energy should be combined with experience and discipline. While they acknowledged the key role of young people in political change, they stressed that leadership must be earned through consistency, service, and results.

The youth also renewed their push for the complete implementation of the agreed 10-point agenda, especially the compensation of victims of political violence and protests. They noted that while compensation cannot bring back lost lives, it can restore dignity and justice to the affected families.

Looking ahead, the group promised to mobilize youth across all counties, drive voter registration, and encourage peaceful political involvement. They concluded by stating that their immediate goal is to build on the achievements already made and promote the “Third Liberation,” which they define as the social and economic empowerment of the Kenyan people.
