What You Didn’t Know About Joyce Laboso

Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso is dead after succumbing to cancer at the Nairobi Hospital.

Labosso was 58 years old.

She had been admitted at the facility’s ICU last week after her arrival from India where she was receiving treatment.

Laboso had left the country on May 29 for the United Kingdom (Royal Madden NHS hospital) where she stayed before being transferred for further treatment in India.

She had been put on full bed rest and the county office had said the number of people visiting her at Nairobi Hospital was restricted to allow her enough rest.

During the days she was out of the country, Deputy Governor Hillary Barchok  had been running the county’s affairs with the assistance of County Secretary Evalyne Rono.

Details of what ailed the governor were not shared to the public, with the county saying it was a private affair.

Here are five things to remember about her.

1: She was the first female Bomet governor. Laboso was the former Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of Kenya. She defeated Isaac Ruto in the August 8, 2017 General Elections, and took office on August 22, 2017.

2: She was married with three sons, but dropped her husband’s last name.

3: Joyce Laboso was elected to the Parliament of Kenya to represent the Sotik Constituency in a by-election held on September 25, 2008 after succeeding her sister, Lorna Laboso, who died in a plane crash.

4: She worked as a Lecturer in the Department of Language and Linguistics at Egerton University and served as a Commissioner of the National Commission on Gender and Development.

5: She was among the first Kenyan female governors elected in the 2017.
