Vihiga Queens skipper Marceline Wayodi has called on his fellow players to stay focused ahead of the Cecafa club championship which will be held in July in Kampala, Uganda.

The tourney will also double up as a qualifier for the third edition of the Caf Women’s Champions League scheduled later this year in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

The Boniface Nyamunyamuh coached side defeated Gaspo Women 2-1 in a dead rubber match at Police Sacco Stadium on Saturday, as they were finally coronated as the 202 Kenya Women’s Premier League champions.

The Vihiga county based side had confirmed had confirmed their champions status a fortnight ago following a 2-1 win against Nakuru City Queens at Nakuru Showground.

In an interview Wayodi hailed the team for the good fight urging them to shift focus in winning the Cecafa title, where they’ll face amongst others, Simba Queens.

“I’m very happy for the win, and it was not easy at all owing to the tough competition from our rivals Gaspo. The management also played their part well in giving us the support and now that we have won the title for the fourth time, focus now shifts to Cecafa. Our aim is to conquer the region and continent.”

I understand that we will have new faces in this tournament, teams we didn’t meet last time we hosted the tournament in 2021 in Nairobi. We will have new teams like JKT Queens (Tanzania) and Kampala City Queens (Uganda) and since we don’t know their style of play, we shall give our best and respect all participating teams. Our aim is to qualify for the Caf championship something which I believe we can easily achieve.”

On his part, the club’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Michael Senelwa Ogada remained optimistic that they will win the Cecafa title and the Caf Champions League title for the first time.

“I can say this (league win) is not the club’s win but the country (Kenya) at large because we shall represent it in the regional championship against other teams. I’m sure we shall win the Cecafa title as we did in 2021 and the only thing we have to do is to sit down and come up with a proper planning to achieve that and one of the plans is to beef up our squad by signing new quality players and have a boot training camp ahead of the tournament.

Vihiga finished top with 55 points, seven points ahead of Gaspo who were runners up.
