A US citizen living in Kansas has been sentenced to prison over her fake marriage to a Kenyan man.

According to US authorities, the woman who was identified as 24-year-old Tierra Ofield entered into the fake marriage with an immigrant from Kenya in a bid to circumvent the US immigration rules.

She pleaded guilty in March in U.S. District Court in Kansas City.

She will now serve one year in jail.

According to court documents filed by prosecutors, Ofield was paid $700 (Ksh. 72,100) to marry a man from Kenya in 2011.

She later received three monthly payments of $150, according to the documents.

She was among six people prosecuted in the marriage fraud scheme.
