Uhuru signs changes allowing manual backup into law

President Uhuru Kenyatta has assented to the Elections (amendment) Laws 2016. This has been announced by State House Spokesman Manoah Esipisu.

“These amedments mean that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commissions (IEBC) can now put in place a complimentary mechanism for identification of voters and transmission of elections results if the electronic voting fails,” he said in a statement to newsroom.

The signing into law of the amendments comes a few days after the contentious bill was passed by parliament.

“Notwithstanding the provisions of section 44, the commission shall put in place a complementary mechanism for identification and transmission of results that is simple, accurate, verifiable, secure, accountable and transparent to ensure that the commission complies with the provisions of Article 38 of the Constitution,” the contentious amendment reads.

The opposition led by ODM and Cord co-principal Raila Odinga had threatened to take to the streets if the bill is approved into law.
