Uasin Gishu Scholarship Saga: Parents, Students Call Off Protests Out Of ‘Respect’ For President Ruto

Parents and students of the Finland-Canada botched scholarship program in Uasin Gishu County have called off their planned demonstrations that were set to take place on Tuesday and Wednesday.According to the aggrieved parents and students, they have done so out of respect for President William Ruto, who is in the county, to preside over opening of the 10th Annual Devolution Conference.

“Hatutakuwa na maandamano siku ya leo kwa sababu rais wa inchi atakuwa hapa na sisi. Tunajua vizuri Uasin Gishu County ni nyumbani kwa rais mwenyewe, na kama rais anakuja hapa, lazima tupeane heshima,” said David Koskei, a parent.

“So, we know his Excellency is aware of this thing, and we are urging him that he rescues these parents and students because we have continued suffering,” said Human Rights Activist Kimutai Kirui.

The students of the education program, however, pleaded with the President to intervene to enable them get a refund.

The Finland/Canada education program by the county had put the leadership of the devolved unit on the spotlight.

A meeting between the Governor Jonathan Bii and Senator Jackson Mandago who formerly served as the county governor at Eldoret Social Hall saw parents and students call out the leadership of the county over alleged mismanagement of the program.
