Former President Donald Trump was escorted from the stage barely minutes into his rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday after loud gunshot-like sounds were reported.
Two top law enforcement sources briefed on the situation say Trump is now safe and likely to survive.
He had blood on the side of his head and around his ear.
Trump was speaking as he reached for the side of his face as popping sounds echoed around the audience.
He then crouched down as Secret Service operatives rushed onstage and surrounded him. He was promptly put into a van and walked off the stage surrounded by agents.
Reporters on the site saw smoke and heard what they assumed were fireworks before everyone fled and law officials surrounded Trump.
Screams from the audience rang out as the incident progressed. A Secret Service spokesperson told X that “the former President is safe.”
“This is now an active Secret Service investigation, and more information will be released as it becomes available,” agency spokesman Anthony Guglielmi wrote.
Trump’s spokesperson, Steven Cheung, stated that the former president “thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act.”
“He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility,” Cheung said.
