Mining Indaba is the premier African-focused mining conference that takes place each year in Cape Town, South Africa. It provides an opportunity for governments to promote their mining sector and attract investors, and it gives mining companies a platform to update investors on project developments and plans. It’s big business and a big deal!

Each year, a panel of experts is assembled to award the Mining Indaba Responsible Resourcing Awards recognizing sustainable mining practices and positive environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices.

This week in Cape Town a total of nine Responsible Resourcing Awards were awarded. In a remarkable recognition of the company’s success and commitment to sustainability, Base Resources, the parent company to Kenya’s Base Titanium, won three of the awards.

Tim Carstens, Managing Director of Base Resources, commented:

“We are honored to receive these awards, which underscore our commitment to responsible and sustainable mining practices. Base Resources remains dedicated to driving positive social and environmental impact in the regions where we operate. These awards serve as recognition of our efforts. I am grateful to our employees, partners, and communities for their ongoing support and collaboration.”

The three awards were:
• Transparency Award: for initiatives combating modern slavery in the supply chain;
• Economy Award: for positively impacting the livelihoods of residents and fostering economic growth through the Community Seed Program; and
• Overall Excellence in Best Practice Award: recognizing Base’s leadership role in the mining sector both in Kenya and globally.

The mining sector when done properly can have an extremely positive impact at a local, regional, and national level. These awards recognize Base as a leader in managing ESG issues and ensuring that benefits from its Kwale Operations are felt in a fair, transparent, and sustainable manner. They provide a wonderful platform from which Kenya can continue to grow its mining sector.
