Kenyans, on the morning of Saturday, February 8, woke up to bad news that popular gospel musician Papa Dennis, formally known as Dennis Mwangi, was found dead outside a recording studio in Pangani.

His twin brother, Simon Mwangi, recounted the beloved singer’s last harrowing moments to the moment his body was discovered by the roadside in Pangani.

In an interview with K24 TV, Simon disclosed that he had hung out his brother at the Jamhuri Park on Friday, February 7, before Dennis decided to leave for the studio.

He later joined him the same day at around 9 p.m., went and greeted his friends and spent time with them leaving his brother to carry on with his work.

After a while, he decided to go and look for his brother but could not find him. He later concluded that his brother had gone out probably to look for food and would be back in no time.

“I spent time with his friends, and later decided to look for my brother. I went to the recording booth, he wasn’t there. I accessed the kitchen, he wasn’t there. I went to the washroom, I did not find him there.

“After failing to find him in all the rooms of the studio, I thought he had gone to the shop to get something. His producer and I waited for him for hours, but he did not return,” narrated Simon.

He then went to Dennis’ producer and asked him to tell the singer to come with food from outside but his calls went unanswered.

“After waiting for Papa Dennis for long without seeing him, the studio manager known as Luva called the producer and told him that he had been informed by security guards manning Kirima Building that the body of a youthful man resembling Papa Dennis had been found lying on a ground near the building.

“We rushed out. The caretaker told us that he had heard a person thud against the ground from the upper floors,” Simon told the broadcaster.

He further disclosed that when they went outside, Dennis was still breathing but the failure of paramedics and police to arrive on time was to blame for his demise.

Before his death, Papa Dennis had won several awards throughout his career; a trophy in the 2015 Mwafaka Awards, 2016 and 2017 Pulse Video Awards, the 2018 African Muzik Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA), and the 2019 Dear Award.

He successfully sold his music across Kenya’s borders, building a reputation that saw him feature the likes of Tanzanian musician Ray C for the hit, Tornado, and Nigeria’s Mr. Flavour for the hit, Mayaya Remix.

His body was transferred to City Mortuary.
