Kenyan striker Michael Olunga was the hero for Al Duhail as they lifted the prestigious Qatar Cup trophy with a convincing 2-0 victory over Al Sadd on Thursday night.
The win marked Al Duhail’s third triumph in the Cup competition, showcasing their dominance in Qatar’s football landscape this season.
The game started off as a tightly contested affair, with both teams displaying skill and determination on the pitch. However, it was in the second half that Al Duhail seized control of the match.
Just three minutes after the restart, Michael Olunga found the back of the net with a well-taken goal, assisted by Ferjani Sassi, the talented Tunisian midfielder. Olunga’s clinical finish gave Al Duhail the lead, and they didn’t look back.
Building on the momentum from Olunga’s goal, Al Duhail continued to press forward, and their efforts were rewarded just five minutes later when Sassi himself got on the scoresheet with a goal of his own.
This doubled Al Duhail’s lead, and despite Al Sadd’s efforts to mount a comeback, Al Duhail’s defense held firm to secure the 2-0 victory and the Qatar Cup title.
Speaking after the crucial win, Olunga congratulated the management and players on the achievement.
“The Qatar Cup 2023 coronation came at the right time and after the team won the Ooredoo Cup. This would give us more motivation in the remaining tournaments of the season,” he said.
“I extend my congratulations to the management and players of Al Duhail and the fans on the occasion of this deserving achievement and after great efforts in the final against a strong team that has players at the highest level,” he added.
