Nzoia Sugar FC have confirmed the appointment of Godfrey ‘Solo’ Oduor as their new head coach following the departure of Salim Babu to Kenya Police FC.
Babu, who led the Millers to a fourth-place finish last season, was in high demand before the law enforcers managed to convince him to be part of their bench as an assistant coach, with their target being to win the FKF Premier League next season.
The Millers had received so many applications for the vacant coaching position, but the federation’s insistence that only CAF B License holders will be allowed at the dugout reduced their options, and they have now confirmed the return of their former coach.
“Breaking news: Godfrey Oduor has been appointed as our new head coach for a period of two years,” read the statement from the club.
Solo returns to Nzoia four years after he left the club for KCB. He was appointed head coach in 2019 and served briefly before he resigned and joined KCB as Zedekiah Otieno’s assistant.
At the end of last season, his contract, along with that of Otieno, was not renewed, and he has now sealed a return to the Bungoma-based side.
Oduor, who also doubles up as the Harambee Starlets coach, is faced with the huge task of rebuilding the team. Nzoia have lost nearly all the players that formed their starting XI last season and are left with fringe players and trialists.
Another challenge is a financial one, as Nzoia Sugar, the club’s parent company, is struggling financially, and although it was a similar case last season, it could prove a bigger challenge this season if the team’s fortunes do not change for the better.
