The upcoming Football Kenya Federation election campaign has started gathering pace with former President Sam Nyamweya, the latest candidate to throw his hat in the ring.
Nyamweya, in a statement, said he will be vying for the FKF presidency, with a promise to change the dwindling fortunes of the Kenyan game. The veteran and experienced football administrator said he has joined the race after consulting his supporters and various stakeholders.
“After wide consultations with some of my supporters, they have urged me to offer myself as a presidential candidate for the forthcoming FKF elections set for February 2024,” said Nyamweya, who is also the patron of Shabana FC.
“Kenyan football has simply become a laughing stock in Africa under the regime led by Nick Mwendwa, and it is unfortunate that even our neighbouring countries are now way ahead of us,” Nyamweya said.
Nyamweya also said he found Kenyan football in turmoil but resuscitated and stabilised.
If elected, Nyamweya said he aims to bring back the sponsors, and put emphasis on the national teams Harambee Stars and Harambee Starlets
“I cannot sit down and leave football and talent going down the drain,” said Nyamweya, who left office eight years ago paving the way for current president Nick Mwendwa.
Nyamweya now joins Gor Mahia Secretary General Sam Ochola, businessman Hussein Mohamed and former FKF CEO Lordvick Aduda in the race for FKF’s top seat with the elections slated for February 24, 2024. Current FKF President Nick Mwendwa has already served two terms.
