Martin Mbui: University Graduate Turns to Riding Boda Boda After Failing to Secure a Job, Earns Up to Sh 2,000 per Day

As unemployment rates continue to soar in the country, many university graduates are resorting to odd jobs to make ends meet.

One such individual is Martin Mbui Muchira, who, despite graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Conservation from the University of Nairobi in 2017, has found himself in the Boda Boda sector.

In a recent interview, the 2018-year-old father of one revealed that securing a job related to his field of study had proven futile despite sending numerous job applications to various organizations.

“I have applied for countless jobs since I graduated. Each year, I sent tens of applications, but I have yet to secure employment,” said Mr. Martin, who operates his boda boda business in Nairobi Central District.

He expressed disappointment, noting that both he and his parents had high hopes that his education would lead to better opportunities and financial stability.

“I was elated when I graduated from the best university in the country. I had hoped to secure employment without much struggle. My parents also expected me to improve our economic status, but unfortunately, that has not been the case,” he remarked.

Mr. Muchira initially ventured into the Boda Boda sector while still in university. He had to balance academic life with running a small tuck shop to finance his education and living expenses.

“I decided to return to boda boda riding upon realizing that the employment opportunities I had hoped for were not materializing even a year after graduation,” he explained.

He stated that he now earns an average of Sh 40,000 per month, translating to between Sh 1,000 and Sh 2,000 per day.
