A post-mortem report by Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor on the body of Sergeant John Kipyegon Kenei, a police officer attached to Deputy President William Ruto’s Harambee House Annex, has shed more light on the officer’s death.
According to the report, Kenei was killed one or two days before his body was found in the living room of his house at Imara Daima, Nairobi on Thursday, January 20.
Addressing journalists on Wednesday, February 26, the government pathologist revealed that Kenei died of a gunshot wound with the bullet fired under his chin exiting through his forehead.

No other wound was discovered other than the bullet entry on the chin with the gun believed to have been placed at close skin contact.
The report further indicated that there were no signs of a struggle.
It remains unclear whether the death was a homicide or a suicide with the consultative team which conducted the postmortem noting that they needed to visit the scene where Kenei’s body was found in a bid to piece together more evidence.
The postmortem was conducted at Chiromo mortuary on Wednesday, February 26 after Oduor failed to show up on Monday, February 24.
Kenei was on duty at the Harambee House Annex office when embattled former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa walked in accompanied by two foreigners on Thursday, February 13.

Echesa was arrested on the same day and later charged with twelve counts as he was accused of seeking to defraud Polish arms dealers whom he allegedly convinced he could help secure lucrative military tenders.
Kenei’s family had disputed claims that the officer committing suicide, demanding that authorities get to the bottom of the matter.
The family believes that Kenei was taken captive before being killed. They revealed that Kenei’s wife and his father unexpectedly received large sums of money in their mobile money accounts from Kenei before he was found dead.
This, they believe, was a ploy by his captors to make the suicide story believable once they killed him.
