Kenyan football icon Thigo slams coach Firat over national team selection

Former Harambee Stars player Allan Thigo has criticized coach Engin Firat for dropping Benson Omala from the squad to play Iran in an international friendly match.

Thigo, who played for Harambee Stars between 1968 and 1979, stated that the decision to drop Omala was unjustifiable and could negatively impact the youngster’s morale.

Omala, who has been in excellent form for his club, Gor Mahia, has scored 19 goals in 20 league games this season. Despite this, Firat gave no valid reason for dropping him, only stating that being a leading goal scorer in a local league does not guarantee a place in the national team.

“I’m upset by what the coach did to Omala and as a former footballer, I will not shy away from speaking about it. It was wrong, unjustifiable, and can’t happen in any country. I do not know of any country where a local league top scorer has been dropped from the national team?’” Thigo told Nairobi news.

Thigo disagreed with this reasoning, citing examples of young players who were incorporated into their national team squad at a tender age, such as Brazilian forward Ronaldo. He also warned Firat to be mindful of his language when addressing Kenyans, as his recent speech showed a lack of respect for those who love football.

Thigo’s criticism of Firat’s decision has sparked a debate among football fans in Kenya, with many expressing their disappointment in the coach’s selection process. Some fans have even called for Firat to be fired, stating that his decision to drop Omala shows a lack of faith in local talent.

Omala, who is regarded as one of the most promising young players in Kenyan football, has yet to comment on the matter. However, Thigo advised him not to reject an offer to play for another country if he feels unwanted in Kenya, citing examples of athletes who have made similar decisions in the past.
