How Singida threatened rivals using Kenyan defender Joash Onyango

Harambee Stars defender Joash Onyango has started training with his new side Singida Fountain Gate FC after ditching Simba SC early this month.

Onyango joined his new teammates for their pre-season camp on Wednesday and was taken through his paces by coach Hans Van Der Plujim.

Simba allowed Onyango to leave after completing the signing of Che Fondoh Malone from CotonSport of Cameroon with the Kenyan having endured a tough time last season from a section of Wekundu wa Msimbazi fans who constantly singled him out for criticism whenever the team struggled.

“JAO AT WORK. Chuma kinanolewa (sharpening the iron),” the club posted on social media after Onyango’s first training session.

While the first season went well, Onyango winning the league and cup double with Simba, he has not enjoyed success in the last two campaigns.

If anything, his relationship with supporters of the Dar es Salaam giants deteriorated following criticism and online abuses directed at him by a section of the club’s fans following their losses to Raja and Wydad Casablanca in the CAF Champions League in 2022-23.

The strained relationship led to reports that the player was ‘fed up’ and wanted to quit Simba and after denials from the club and the player, it was confirmed when he left for the Tanzanian moneybags.

At Singida, Onyango will be playing with familiar faces such as former Gor Mahia striker Meddie Kagere, who was also his team-mate at Simba, with reports saying former Kariobangi Sharks and Kenya Police FC midfielder Duke Abuya is also on his way to the club.
