Juja MP George Koimburi stated on Sunday that MPs were paid Ksh 2 million in exchange for voting yes on the Finance Bill, which went to second reading on Thursday.

Koimburi, one of 114 parliamentarians who voted against the Bill, said that MPs were paid to enact the legislation, which has provoked widespread outcry as the cost of living rises.

Speaking at the AIPCA Ndururumo Church in Juja constituency, he revealed that he declined the bribe and voted against the measure, demonstrating his strong opposition to the proposed legislation.

“We were offered money… you saw how they carried money in sacks. We were told that for every yes vote, we would receive Ksh 2 million,” Koimburi said.

Koimburi’s claims have fueled the already-heated debate over the Finance Bill.

The plan, which has attracted strong opposition from a variety of sources, proposes a number of tax increases and economic measures that critics say will burden ordinary individuals.

Koimburi emphasized his dedication to his citizens, noting that he could not in good conscience support a bill that he believes will hurt the public.

The MP also decried police brutality during the recent anti-Finance Bill protests in Nairobi.

The congressman expressed his dismay at law enforcement’s harsh actions, which have resulted in injuries and two reported deaths.

Furthermore, Koimburi issued a strong warning about the potential repercussions of the Finance Bill being passed and signed into law by the president.

He warned that when young people become increasingly disillusioned and frustrated by the economic problems imposed by such legislation, they may resort to extreme actions, including mass upheaval.

“If this bill passes, the youth may burn the country,” he added.
