Kenya is experiencing a new wave of civic awareness, driven mainly by young people who want to protect the country’s democratic future. What started last year as a peaceful uprising led by Gen Z, with digital mobilization, symbolic street marches, and demands for accountability, has grown into a broader national conversation about governance, justice, and electoral transparency.

This generation, often seen as disengaged, has instead become a moral guide for the nation. Equipped with smartphones, national flags, and a strong understanding of the constitution, young Kenyans have challenged political complacency. They have demanded higher standards from public institutions. Their message is clear: public service must meet the ideals of integrity, transparency, and fairness.

Kalonzo reiterated with the by-elections on November 27 and the 2027 General Election approaching, focus has shifted to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). Many hoped this new Commission would bring a fresh start, but questions about its appointment process and readiness for voter registration have raised public concern.

Mr. Musyoka said key issues include the rollout of iris-scanning technology without enough public engagement, limited voter registration hours, lack of transparency in the distribution of registration kits, and reports of inconsistent or inadequate civic education. Civil society groups warn that these issues may undermine public trust when electoral credibility is crucial.

At the same time, watchdogs have expressed concern over the alleged misuse of state resources and voter intimidation tactics, highlighting the ongoing need for stronger enforcement of electoral laws. Fortunately, the IEBC’s Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee recently took action against those involved in campaign violence, showing promise in restoring confidence if these efforts continue regularly.

As Kenya faces this critical moment, the energy and clarity of its youth serve as a strong reminder: democracy flourishes when citizens stay alert and institutions fulfill their responsibilities to the people. Said, Mr. Musyoka.
