Suspected Al-Shabaab militants have attacked a Kenyan military camp in Kulbiyow, Lower Jubba, Somalia, some 18 kilometres from the Kenyan border.

“We are under massive attack and there is massive exchange of fire,” military spokesman Lt-Col Paul Njuguna told Kenya’s Daily Nation newspaper.

Al-Shabaab spokesperson Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, claimed that “Two mujahideen rammed suicide car bombs into the base in Kulbiyow town before storming it. After hand-to-hand fighting, we have taken over the base”. He further claimed that Shabaab fighters killed at least 57 Kenyans at the base.

The KDF has since denied this claim. “That is false,” Kenyan military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Njuguna told Reuters, without giving any casualty figures.
