CNN reporter covering African affairs, Larry Madowo, has expressed his surprise after reportedly being charged over a thousand Kenyan shillings for a meal of ugali and omena.

Typically, in many restaurants in Nairobi, ugali and omena are sold for 150 shillings per plate. However, although Madowo did not specify the location where he had the meal, he showed his surprise at being charged 1,200 shillings.

Madowo posed a rhetorical question, questioning when a humble meal like omena had been elevated and priced so high, considering that many perceive it as a common dish deserving of an equally ordinary price.

“This meal cost KSh1,200. Since when was omena given such respect?” Madowo asked, adding, “Is this fair?”

In the comments section of the post on Facebook, Madowo inquired about the legitimate price of such a meal, expressing further surprise when some suggested that it should not exceed 70 shillings per plate.

Here are some of the comments:

“That’s a whole month’s funds…here in our neighborhood, it’s 70 shillings 🙄🤔😂😂…and you’ll be full until supper.” – Baraza Fred.

“Is that really the ordinary ugali and omena we know?” – Kereyian Meshack.

“Bro, all that money?!…let me buy three iron sheets instead and cook for myself. 😂 Listen to poverty speaking now.” – Sagini Ryans.

“You must have gone to a five-star hotel. Better to get ugali and omena with a slice of lemon for 200 shillings. 🤣🤣🤣” – Josephine Gathi.

What’s the price of ugali and omena in your area?
