Chelsea transfer deadline news: David Luiz, Alonso

Paris St-Germain defender David Luiz could be in line for a shock return to Chelsea. The Premier League club have offered £30m plus add-ons for the Brazil international, who left Stamford Bridge for France two years ago in a £50m deal.

But with just a day to go until Transfer Deadline Day,discussions are ongoing with Luiz reportedly keen on a return to west London.

New Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has made it clear a centre-back was top of his priority list with moves for Alessio Romagnoli at AC Milan and Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli falling through so far.

Sky in Italy reported last week that Chelsea’s £30m bid for Romagnoli was rejected, and that there was a “90 per cent” chance of Koulibaly not moving to Conte’s team.

Chelsea first purchased Luiz in January 2011 from Benfica for £21m.

Chelsea will complete a £23m move for Fiorentina’s Spanish full-back Marcos Alonso, 25, and will look to the loan market for another central defender.

Former Bolton Wanderers and Sunderland left-back Alonso has agreed to join Chelsea for £23 million and travelled to London on Tuesday night to boost head coach Antonio Conte’s defensive options.

Conte believes Alonso will offer his side better balance, as he is genuinely left-footed, and gives him the option of moving Cesar Azpilicueta to the right and using Branislav Ivanovic as an emergency central defender when needed.

Chelsea have seen a number of big bids rejected for central defenders, including Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly and AC Milan’s Alessio Romagnoli, which has forced them to look at alternative options.
