SportPesa has acquired a major stake in an Italian betting firm in a move that is seen as an entrance for the local gaming firm in the European markets.

SportPesa achieved this fete after acquiring a majority shareholding stake in RCS Gaming, a licensed gaming operator which is part of RCS Media Group.

SportPesa, which recently entered Tanzania, says the move will see RCS Gaming rename its GazzaBet brand to SportPesa.

The newly appointed Chairman of the company in Italy, Adam Beighton, says the acquisition of RCS Gaming will enable rapid expansion in Italy.

“This acquisition also presents new opportunities to showcase to our current and future customers the SportPesa culture,” Beighton said.

Italy is the biggest gambling and betting market in Europe with sports betting reaching Sh41.6 billion in 2016.
