When we’re 20, many of us are reckless and don’t care too much about our future. But our 20s are the time when the major patterns of behavior are formed. They determine how our lives will look like in 10 and 20 years. Some of these patterns may be harmful and we may even realize that, but it’s not that easy to ditch damaging habits.

We came up with a list of harmful habits that disturb the lives of many 30-year-olds and found healthy alternatives that can easily replace any of them.

1. Spending all your money

Alternatives: Set your priorities straight and try to understand what you want the most. A trip or a useful educational program will bring more pleasure and benefits than cosmetic products or dinner at McDonald’s. Try to learn more about effective ways to save money and choose the one that works the best for you.

2. Following fashion trends

When we’re 20, we love to attract attention and follow fashion trends. So we spend a fortune on clothes as we regularly come across cute little things and accessories. If you still spend a significant part of your budget on clothing, it’s time to change your habits.

Alternatives: Find your style. Instead of buying all the things you like, determine your body type, find the colors and the clothing that looks good on you, and figure out which clothes you feel the most comfortable in. Creating your own style is a more interesting task than just buying trendy things. As a bonus, you’ll know for sure which clothes from the new collections will look good on you and which won’t.

3. Clinging to your old friends

Alternatives: Accept that we used to communicate with many people only because we studied or lived together. But now we can find new friends who will be closer to us at work, at the gym, or at some social club. And don’t worry too much, you’ll still have a couple of your closest friends.

4. Not paying attention to your daily routine

It’s easy to go to bed at 2 a.m. and wake up at 10 a.m. when you’re 20. But later in life, our days become busier and many people still don’t want to adjust their daily routines to this new rhythm. As a result, waking up in the morning feels like an impossible task, we’re always late and constantly tired.

Alternatives: Determine the habits that ruin your routine, like watching a TV series all night long or checking your social media. Substitute them with something healthy, but pleasant. For example, you can read a book instead of a post before going to bed or watch TV on the weekend instead of a workday. This will help you determine the most convenient time for waking up and going to bed.

5. Expecting too much from your metabolism

Many people don’t have to try too hard to stay fit in their 20s. But our metabolism slows down with age. If you constantly overeat, have lunches at fast-food restaurants, and lead a sedentary lifestyle, good genes won’t save you from excessive fat in the future.

Alternatives: Work on your eating habits. You don’t have to stick to a strict diet: you just have to find healthy dishes that you like. It’s also beneficial to learn how to cook your favorite unhealthy dishes: homemade burgers are way better for you than the ones from McDonald’s. Don’t forget to try a new and interesting sport or at least make a habit of going for a walk in the evening.

6. Not learning how to cook

Alternatives: Learn how to cook several simple, yet tasty dishes that don’t require a lot of time to prepare. It’d be perfect if both you and the person you live with liked them. Find your signature dish and learn to cook it flawlessly. So your grandchildren may even ask you for a recipe many years later!

7. Ignoring an annual health check-up

Alternatives: Make taking care of your health a habit. You’ve gotten used to brushing your teeth 2 times a day, so it’s time to get used to visiting a dentist 2 times a year, and running some tests once a year to make sure that your health is OK. You’ll thank yourself for this habit one day.

8. Spending too much time on dating websites

Alternatives: It’s easier to find a partner in an informal environment, after a small chat, than at a dinner with a stranger. Try to go out more, meet new people, and keep in touch with the ones who you feel a connection with. If you have a lot of hobbies and interests, your chances of finding a partner are higher in comparison with just using dating websites.

9. Living in the moment

Alternatives: Determine your strengths and passions. After you find the things you’re interested in, keep moving in this direction. You can look for educational courses, internships, and other opportunities. Then in a couple of years, you’ll become a well-paid professional who will truly enjoy their job.
