Kenya’s move towards a green and sustainable economy is picking up speed. Young innovators are taking the lead in creating practical, scalable solutions to environmental issues. Recently, the Kenya Community Development Foundation (KCDF) awarded KSh 53 million in grants to 10 youth-led organizations and two individuals through the Young Environmentalist Innovation Challenge (YEIC).
Now in its second edition, YEIC focuses on action-driven youth aged 15 to 35. It empowers them to turn bold ideas into projects that tackle climate change, promote environmental conservation, and create economic opportunities. This year’s winners were chosen from more than 400 applicants. They are addressing issues like waste management, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and ecosystem restoration.

The innovations include bioethanol production, plastic-to-gas conversion technologies, IoT and AI-powered smart farming, biodegradable leather, recycled construction materials, and forest monitoring sensors. Other projects focus on biogas storage and accessible carbon credit platforms, showcasing the creativity and diversity of Kenya’s young green entrepreneurs.
KCDF states that the grants will help these innovators scale their solutions, strengthen community involvement, and create green jobs. These are vital elements for a fair transition to a climate-friendly future.
“These solutions show that young people are not only aware of the climate crisis—they are also designing and implementing tools to address it,” KCDF said in a statement.

The significance of grassroots innovation is highlighted by Kenya’s climate commitments. These commitments call for a shift to renewable energy, circular economy practices, and climate-resilient agriculture. By backing young innovators, KCDF is supporting national priorities while highlighting the voices of those who will face the long-term effects of climate change.
The event also launched the third edition of YEIC, themed “Scaling Innovations for Environmental Impact.” This new phase changes the focus from idea generation to expansion. It aims to support proven solutions ready to reach more communities and enhance their environmental impact.
Applications for the 2025 challenge are open via www.kcdf.or.ke. This offers the next group of youth innovators a chance to contribute to Kenya’s green transformation.
