Woman who lost her two children due to police brutality dies after drowning inside her house in Mathare

The Mathare community in Kenya is mourning the loss of one of its passionate advocates for justice, Mama Victor, also known as Benna Buluma.

Mama Victor’s life was tragically cut short when she became one of the victims of the devastating floods that swept through the area on the night of April 23, 2024.

Her body, among ten others, was found in the floodwaters of River Mathare.

Mama Victor’s journey as an activist was deeply rooted in personal tragedy.

In 2017, she experienced the heart-wrenching loss of her two sons to extrajudicial killings by the police.

Rather than succumbing to despair, Mama Victor found the strength to turn her grief into action.

She became a vocal advocate for justice, determined to bring attention to the systemic issues of police brutality and extrajudicial killings plaguing her community.

Through her pain, she founded the Justice Warriors of Mothers, a network dedicated to seeking accountability for victims of police violence and providing support to those affected by such injustices.

Mama Victor’s leadership inspired countless others to join the fight for justice, fostering a sense of solidarity and empowerment among marginalized communities in Nairobi and beyond.
