Where’s Nick Mwendwa? Football Kenya Federation President goes off the radar

Football Kenya Federation President Nick Mwendwa has been absent from the public eye since November 2021, when he was barred from engaging in football matters by the High Court.

Mwendwa has been embroiled in legal battles and controversy, which began when former Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed disbanded FKF, alleging corruption and abuse of office.

Mwendwa was arrested and prosecuted for various crimes in Nairobi, but the charges were dropped due to a lack of evidence. The Director of Public Prosecution wishes to charge Mwendwa afresh, leading to further legal battles.

In November 2022, FKF’s executive committee was reinstated, but Mwendwa was asked to step aside from management until his court battles were determined.

Recent reports suggest that Fifa may have endorsed Mwendwa’s return to management, as he was present at a meeting between FKF officials and their Fifa counterparts in January 2023.

Mwendwa was elected FKF president in 2016 for a four-year term and led Harambee Stars to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, which was regarded as his main achievement.

He was re-elected for a four-year term in 2020, but allegations of high-handedness, corruption, and poor performance by national teams led to a fallout with the government.

The controversy surrounding Mwendwa and FKF has raised concerns about the state of football in Kenya, with some fans and stakeholders calling for more transparency and accountability in the administration of the sport.

FKF has been accused of mismanagement, lack of proper governance structures, and failure to address issues affecting football development in the country.
