President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday, January 4 intervened to ensure secondary schools get Ksh14.6 Billion after the full resumption of learning.
Education CS George Magoha had on Sunday revealed that the money was set to be released at a later date as the Ministry had prioritized the Ksh4 Billion meant for primary schools.
“Even though I had said earlier that it’s only the Ksh4 Billion meant for a primary school that would be released yesterday, secondary schools’ Ksh14.6 Billion was also released yesterday after the president intervened.
“The money was released simultaneously and depending on which bank (schools use) but the money will soon reflect,” explained Magoha.
Magoha was speaking on Tuesday as he toured Kianjau Primary School in Githwariga primary school in Weitemere slum, Nyeri County to assess the situation after schools reopened on Monday.
The money was sent to secondary schools under the Free Day Secondary Education (FDSE) program with most learners resuming school after a nine months break.
The former Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) chairman was impressed with the school’s adherence to Covid-19 guidelines set by the Ministry of Health as he encouraged the use of bar soaps instead of liquid soap.
The CSÂ fired a warning to school heads to make sure that the money is used for the right purposes.
“Please use this money for what it is meant for. This time we want to thank God that we are alive, I have no plan to make any extra money this year, nobody should have any plans to do so.
“This money belongs to the children and God will punish you severely if you even smell the money. It is not about how much the government gives but how it is used,” added Magoha.
The education sector is the biggest beneficiary of the Ksh929.5 Billion two-year stimulus plan, as more money will go towards reforming primary, secondary, and university education.
Ksh28.8 Billion was committed to constructing additional classrooms and repairing existing ones to expand learning space in the next two years.
