President Uhuru Kenyatta has signed a new law that bars Sonu chairman Babu Owino from seeking re-election.

According to the new law, a university leader will only hold office for one term.

The new law further states that a person who has been a member of the student cancel of a university for two terms shall not be eligible for such election at any university in Kenya.

These changes, which will greatly affect Babu Owino, are contained in the newly assented Universities Amendment Act (2016). Mr. Owino, whose name is Paul Ongili, has been leading Sonu since 2010.

In last year’s Sonu elections, Babu Owino was accused of assaulting a rival during the last days of the campaigns.
