Traffic cop caught on camera collecting bribes suspended

A traffic police officer in Nairobi who was caught on video soliciting bribes from drivers in the Umoja area has been suspended from duty, National Police Service (NPS) Spokesperson Resila Onyango announced.

The officer, identified as Constable Haron Mwangi from the Buruburu Police Station, is seen in the video collecting bribes from six matatu drivers while directing traffic at the B Center area in Umoja.

Unbeknownst to him, the interaction was being recorded by an informant.

“The officer, badge number 63151 PC Haron Mwangi, associated with Traffic within the Buruburu Police Station, has been suspended with immediate effect from the Traffic Police Unit, and procedures for his dismissal are underway,” stated Ms. Onyango in a statement on Friday.

“The National Police Service takes this opportunity to commend the public and the media for their continuous cooperation with the NPS in the fight against corruption.”

Ms. Onyango further emphasized that the NPS would not relent in its constitutional duty to combat corruption within the police force.

Earlier, the Kenyan Police Force had stated that the officer had been removed from the Traffic Police Unit and reassigned to the main police station for further administrative action, following identification.

However, the exact amount he received cannot be confirmed from the video clip.
