David Rudisha wins gold to defend 800m Olympic title

Kenya’s David Rudisha took home gold after clocking 1:42.16 in the 800 metres finals to defend the title he won in the 2012 Olympics.

This was the second gold medal for Kenya at the Rio Olympics and a saving grace at a time when the Kenyan team delegation at the on-going Olympics has been facing multiple scandals.

Algeria’s Taoufik Makhloufi took silver while Clayton Murphy of the US took bronze.

The night of the race was largely dominated by a heavy down pour. However, with his greatest rival Nigel Amos having failed to qualify in the first round of the 800 metres qualification, history was left on Rudisha. The Kenyan athlete did not disappoint, improving on his time to bag the second gold for Kenya.
