Police in Lamu County has thwarted an attempted attack by at least 50 suspected Al Shabaab gunmen.

The militants reportedly stormed Pandanguo village on Saturday at about 10 pm and engaged reservists in a gun battle before officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) joined in.

According to sources who spoke to Citizen Digital, the gun battle went on until 3 am Sunday morning when the Al Shabaab militants were finally repulsed.

Confirming the incident, Lamu County Commissioner Irungu Macharia said the situation has since been contained, adding that “there is no need for alarm” and “I urge Pandanguo residents not to vacate their village since their security is guaranteed.”
