Police officers in Gigiri, Nairobi County, on Tuesday recovered Ksh13 million stashed in sacks suspected to be proceeds of drug peddling.
In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) stated that the officers had also seized marijuana substances alongside the cash during the police operation staged at Kariwa Slums in Ngara, Nairobi County.
Also seized during the operation were 173 pieces of blended bhang and 42 cartons containing 200 cigarettes each.
Four suspects were apprehended during the raid and brought in to record their statements.
The detectives raided the scene of the crime following a tip off from locals.
With the suspects in custody, the Director of the Anti-Narcotics Unit has taken up the matter and will be carrying out further investigations.
Police officers had been conducting investigations after increased reports of drug trafficking in the area among other illegal activities.
This comes even as Nairobi continues to record increased crime rates.
According to data shared by the National Police Service (NPS) covering the year ended December 2021, Nairobi recorded the highest number of crimes at 6,686 followed by Kiambu (5,715) Meru (5,032), Nakuru (4,281) and Machakos (3,271).
The five counties accounted for nearly a third of all the crimes reported over the course of the year under review.
Instructively, in June this year, detectives acting on intelligence leads, intercepted a car speeding towards the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. It was later revealed that the vehicle was ferrying cocaine.
The drug dealers had disguised the cocaine worth Ksh 120 Million in white powder packages to avoid detection.
In a statement, police indicated that detectives intercepted the vehicle after receiving intelligence from Kenyans.
