The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa is allegedly planning to extend his term beyond the expiration of his contract in 2024, according to sources close to the federation based at Kandanda House.

This move is reportedly aimed at covering up the time wasted during Kenya’s suspension by FIFA due to government interference.

The suspension resulted from the former CS for Sport installing a caretaker committee to run the league, which was subsequently declared null and void.

“There are plans to see our term at the helm of FKF extended so that we could cover up the time lost during the FIFA suspension. Details of the plan will be released later.” A source who spoke to Newsday Kenya said.

However, Nick Mwendwa is currently facing a tough task in controlling football in the country, as two factions are currently fighting over control of Kandada House.

The National Assembly Committee on Sports, Culture and Tourism has directed the Ministry of Sports to convene a meeting to bring together its top brass, parliamentarians, FKF, and County Football Associations (CFAs) to iron out the differences between the two football bodies.

The CFAs accuse the Nick Mwendwa-led body of not recognizing them despite being duly registered by the Sports Registrar.

They want the FKF disbanded on the grounds that it is not compliant with the Sports Act 2013.

Led by Wilfred Marori, the Secretary General of the Nairobi County Football Association, the CFAs argue that the FKF Constitution is not aligned with the Sports Act and the Kenyan Constitution 2010. They want fresh FKF elections held by September.

Webuye West MP Dan Wanyama, who is also the chairman of the National Assembly Committee on Sports, Culture and Tourism, has given the Ministry of Sports three weeks to sort out the matter.

He urged FKF not to be hardliners and to come to the negotiation table with an attitude of give and take. The MPs accused the Ministry of Sports of not doing enough to solve the unending conflict in football governance in the country.

They warned that they would not allow a section of persons to hold the country hostage behind the threat of being banned by FIFA.
