Reports indicate that FKF President Nick Mwendwa is currently contemplating resigning from his position ahead of the upcoming polls scheduled for later this year.
Throughout Mwendwa’s two terms in office, allegations of corruption and abuse of power have cast a shadow over his tenure, resulting in numerous legal battles.
It is rumored that Mwendwa, who has faced challenges in maintaining harmonious relationships within his executive committee, is now seriously considering resignation to alleviate the mounting pressure emanating from various sectors of the sports fraternity.
“Mwendwa is likely to resign to preempt the mounting pressure from football stakeholders; he wants to hand over the reins,” hinted a source close to Mwendwa.
Mwendwa’s purported decision emerges at a time when his once strong ties with the government appear to be faltering.
This shift comes after the Sports Cabinet Secretary, Ababu Namwamba, declared Mwendwa ineligible to contest in the upcoming polls scheduled for October.
Also declared not eligible to vie were FKF Deputy President Doris Petra, as well as National Executive Committee (NEC) Members Muriithi Nabea (Eastern), Joseph Andere (Nyanza), and Enos Kweya (Western).
Mwendwa has yet to declare his candidacy, although rumors suggest that he may throw his support behind FKF CEO Barry Otieno, a former journalist and close ally, as his potential successor.
A general meeting of FKF has been scheduled for March 16 to address election timelines and guidelines, including the controversial 2020 electoral process.
