President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to open the renovated Nyayo Stadium on Saturday after three years of closure.

Nyayo Stadium was closed in 2017 for renovations to host the 2018 Africa Nations Championships (Chan), which was later moved to Morocco over unpreparedness.

The statement from the Acting Commissioner of Sports Gitonga J. Gerald dated September 24 says that the president will preside over the ceremony.

Gitonga has invited all sports federations in the country to attend the function.

“Please extend the invitation to your players and the dress code will be sports tracksuits preferably ones depicting Kenya National colors,” Gitonga said.

The participants are required to be seated at the stadium by 9:30 am.

The president had made an impromptu visit to the 45,000-seat capacity stadium in June to inspect the progress.

First Lady Margaret Kenyatta and Sports CS Amina Mohamed had accompanied the president.

The stadium was briefly opened to host a Kenyan Premier League match between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards in August 2017 then closed again for renovation.

It was then partially reopened for Beyond Zero Half Marathon on March 8 and February 11 for former President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi’s state funeral.
